Unfitted Kitchens and Furniture

Unfitted kitchens and furniture is a work in progress. The idea is to create a range of kitchen and other joinery elements, which can still be a bespoke size to fit in the space, but are not fitted to the space in the same sense as standard fitted units (i.e not merged with the fabric of the building using filler pieces, sealants, caulk, scribed panels etc.)

The benefits are that unfitted joinery is more like pieces of furniture (except some of it will have plumbing and electrical connections). This makes it more easily disconnected and relocatable elsewhere, whereas fitted units have a nasty tendancy of ending up in a skip when new people move in and rennovate.

There is also a slightly looser, perhaps more relaxed, and less uniform look and feel to a room without fitted units. Unfitted joinery will need consideration of the following details

  • Adjustable levelling feet which are attractive, rather than plastic feet hidden behind a toe kick
  • Exposed cabinetry / framework with aesthetic joints, rather than screwed together carcasses covered with an applied end panel
  • Worktops with an integrated upstand, rather than an upstand fixed to the wall like skirting boards are

I am currently collaborating with an architect on the design of a freestanding ‘appliance bank’, and kitchen island for their own property.
